Our Mission:
The Alaskan Malamute Assistance League is dedicated to the health and well being of all Alaskan Malamutes. Our main objectives are to rehabilitate and re-home rescued Alaskan Malamutes, assist Malamute owners, and provide education services to the public. Our ultimate goal is to ensure that every Alaskan Malamute has the chance to live a life that they deserve.
Who Are We?
The Alaskan Malamute Assistance League (AMAL) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit and charitable organization recognized by the national breed club, the Alaskan Malamute Club of America. We are an all-volunteer national rescue network which includes state and local breed rescue groups, as well as individual members.
What do we do?
As a national rescue network, AMAL provides co-ordination support for local and national rescue efforts, emergency funding for rescued Malamutes, and acts as a clearinghouse for adoption inquiries or assistance requests. AMAL provides information and documentation for individuals and groups wishing to establish a breed rescue. We work closely with other rescue organizations on local and national rescue issues, monitor dog related legislation, act as a bulletin board for Malamute related issues, and maintain statistical information on rescue efforts and rescued dogs.
All our member rescue organizations and individual volunteers must agree to operate under the AMAL Code of Ethics, and to follow approved minimum guidelines for rescuing or re-homing dogs. This ensures a high standard of quality care and support services from our members. AMAL members work directly with shelters, individuals, and other rescue organizations to arrange the release, transportation and foster care of Malamutes needing our aid. All the Alaskan Malamutes that come into our rescue program receive the same level of care and assistance regardless of how they find their way to us.
Why are we needed?
Not all dog breeds are suitable for every home and many dogs go to homes that lack proper breed education. Sometimes dogs end up in homes that are not suitable for any breed of dog! All too often, these dogs are lost or abandoned, neglected, or even abused by their owners. Still more become homeless due to owner circumstances such as divorce, death, or financial problems.
Alaskan Malamutes come to us from vaarious sources; local shelters, owner surrenders, Good Samaritan turn-ins, and as strays. All of these Malamutes are spayed or neutered, examined by a veterinarian, given medical treatment where treatment is needed, and current on all vaccinations prior to placement into their new homes. In addition, we evaluate the Malamutes for their temperament and any special re-homing needs.
Sometimes an Alaskan Malamute comes to us where very little maintenance is required before it is ready for adoption. More often, the rescue dog may need additional training or some level of medical care. This may be as simple as teaching a dog to walk on a leash, or giving a dog basic veterinary care, or feeding a proper diet. Occasionally, dogs needing rehabilitation that is more intensive come into rescue. Our members work closely with all the Malamutes, especially those with additional needs, to ensure that they will be healthy and well-behaved members of their new families.
How can you help?
Alaskan Malamutes and the Alaskan Malamute Assistance League need your help. Your assistance can be as simple as a little of your personal time or a financial donation, or as “hands-on” as behavior training and medical rehabilitation. Rescue needs help with home foster care for waiting Malamutes, home checks and referral screenings for prospective adopters, evaluations for dogs in shelters or individual homes, and some dogs need transportation to new homes or available rescues.
Even if you are unable to help rescue dogs directly, you can still help Alaskan Malamutes by referring potential adopters and educating the public about breed health, temperament and personality. You may choose to join our membership in support of rescue. Please contact the Alaskan Malamute Assistance League or your local Malamute rescue for the many ways you can help save Alaskan Malamutes in need.
